Counting

We will start the Probability and Statistics unit off on Thursday with a discussion of counting.  Make sure that you print the notes for this unit.  There are a lot of pages in these notes, so you might want to print multiple slides per page.  (The link to the notes is available on the right side of the blog or on the right side of the WebWork.) You'll also want to make sure you bring your calculators to class for this unit.  We'll kick off the Probability and Stats unit with some discussions of methods of counting this week.  Consider the question below.

Look at the menu of your favorite pizza shop.  How many different types of crusts, sauces, and toppings are there?  How many different three topping pizzas could you make if a pizza consists of a crust, sauce, and three toppings?  What about four topping pizzas?

These are the kinds of questions we will be able to answer after our discussion of counting.

Challenge Problem (Due Thursday, February 15): Print the menu from your favorite pizza shop.  How many different types of crusts, sauces, and toppings are there?  How many different three topping pizzas could you make if a pizza consists of one crust, one sauce, and three toppings?  What about four topping pizzas? Include the pizza menu with your answer.

  1. I printed the menu from Pizza Hut and there were 5 types of crust types of sauces and 19 different types of Toppings. I did the math and multiplied all of those and came of with 475 different Three topping pizza combinations.

  2. What about 4 topping pizzas? When you're dealing with your toppings, make sure you think about whether or not order matters. You can turn in your work on Thursday for extra credit points.

  3. I have really enjoyed probability. Probability could really help you solve real life situations. The problem I struggled the most with so far was the different flavors of ice cream and you couldn't use the same flavor twice and you had three different cones. I looked over the menu of my favorite pizza place but there were to many flavors so I gave up. Can't wait to start statistics.

  4. I actually really enjoyed counting it was surprising me how much I was understanding it when put in this way. I did really have any trouble in this section and it was fun to me as well. Which is so suprising because I'm so terrible at math and I didn't think it could ever be interesting!

  5. The probability section in this chapter I found harder and more confusing than the statistics section. The probability section gets harder as the options increase in the questions. The tree drawings help to a certain degree, but after a while they become confusing.

  6. I really enjoyed the probability area, but it is the statistics part that is getting me. I was having some trouble but I ended up getting help.

  7. Counting was not as complicated as it looked in the notes however I still find myself over thinking the problems. It is kind of hard to decipher what method to use.
